Day 28

Oil on Canvas. Painted from a Photograph.
Just a tiny bit obsessed with black backgrounds.

Its not that big. I like the floor, cheap easel that makes stand is lying in the corner. Expensive easels that allow you to sit, can't afford.

Cleaning the black from the paint brush was a mess. I have used black occasionally (Ms. La Due's advise) in my previous paintings but this one required a lot of black for the sharp contrast. I made more mess cleaning up than making the mess itself (if this makes any sense). Definitely ruined the most comfortable jeans ever. =(
Ok I think I am going to crash now. Super exhausted!!!

Day 26

Paintings without any signature, yet we all know the painter.
3.2 mega pixel (yes its super old) camera does no justice to these beautiful colors of the Sunrise.

btw, these are all from different days.

Some art it is...

On usual days, I wake up to beautiful Sunrise =)
Today the Sun was hiding behind the clouds.
But, I saw a more beautiful thing as I walked outside my appt.
A piece of art that a drunk probably created last night and if a pothead, who might call himself an artist, were to pass by would pick it up and place it in some art museum calling this broken exit sign a piece of modern art.
That artist might call this thing, 'The Agony OF the Ecstasy', truly expressing the feelings of how a human(under the influence) feels when the exit sign/journey after life/life towards the end has been cut short due to drugs, or something on that line. I am just making this up...
I am sure there is someone out there who would curate a stupid show with broken exit signs and probably make a lot of money. I mean whatever, but for now my hallway is more than a hallway, its where all the bad art meets. And I get to admire it every time I open the door to leave 533.

Another piece of art I saw, was a blown up 'something' (it was not a balloon for sure), tied on someones door with food all around it. But by the time I got back to take a picture of it, it was gone. They must have heard Amanda and I screaming outside their door in shock.
"WHHAAAT THE HELL IS THAT?"
"OH NO ITS NOT A BALLOON!!!!!"
"EWWWWWW"
"KARDON BE DISGUSTING"

Luckily, I slept through all the mayhem that happened last night.
The joys of living at Kardon ^_^

Waiting

This is not the greatest.
But,
I would like to get better some day.

While I waited for my parents (again).

Delirious

This is what it feels to write a lab report at midnight... =/
nevertheless, a beautiful song.

Day 25

Indian Student Association of Temple (I.S.A.T) does this (mostly horrible) dance show every year. It is composed of dances and few random singers here and there, not doubting the skills of these performing artists, but the show is bad because there is usually technical difficulty and the sound system is terrible. Although the fraternity and sorority rule the show with their strolls to hip-hop music, sometimes we can tap along with few known Bollywood songs. Even the Bollywood songs get annoying, most of them are repeated many times...even with tons of fricken Bollywood movies that come out everyday, people want to dance to the same songs. Usually the dance teams are pretty sweet, one of the good dances I remember. In the end I guess its not THAT bad. I mean we can at least get a laugh out when someone walks off the stage because they don't remember the steps to the dance. (yes, I have seen this and there were only 4 girls to start out with and one of the girls just walked off, it was just a bad bad dance, but funny at the same time)
But unfortunately or fortunately I have been doing the program cover for the shows...I mean I enjoy doing them so I guess it is fortunately. =)

watercolor, acrylic, marker on paper 11/16/09

This year, I wanted to do something better than what I have been doing for last couple of years.
Watercolor is not as bad/hard to control as I thought it'd be. I made this at work, I hope I don't get fired for just setting up an art studio in a computer lab. I have already gotten a warning indirectly for doing too much school work instead of paying attention to what is going on in the lab. People on Facebook dont get yelled at but you know people who are trying to understand Physics do.
(I think the title doesn't make any sense, Sanskar means value/culture in a person...I mean...the name should be like Sanskruti (to make it relate to culture) or something. and Taste of India sounds very cliche and reminds me of the restaurant NY, it gives an image of food and not dance...yes the title is kind of annoying. I am actually very annoyed about them using a pretty Sanskrit word in the wrong place and wrong context.)

marker and pen on paper

This one is inspired by the board game 'LIFE'. Because the show's name was Zindagi which means Life. I incorporated hints on Temple University (the bell tower on the right, the random skinny jeans bikers, the Bhangra team next to the bell towers, you can also see a student wearing cap and gown and and saving the best for last, you can see the lady in the car holding 'diamond dollar' the fake money of Temple...hehe I thought it was pretty smart). Also, the journey of all the Desis from the motherland to here, I made the Taj Mahal on the left corner and the the lady in the sari waving goodbye is supposed to be air hostess or the boat hostess whatever you like. I wish I had more time to color this, it would have looked sooooo much better. We can clearly see I had stolen some Ideas, but here is the original.

marker, pen on paper

This one was just lame, I had no idea what I was doing...lol. Though the way I wrote 2007 looks pretty cool I think.

I miss Parth's crazy 'Jadoo' dances, and Pooja on Agni.

Day 24- Continued

I forgot about these two.

The first one I made on the ferry back from the Statue of Liberty island to the main land and so my family thinks I am loco.
They are all very loosely done, clearly my goal is not perfection, I don't usually draw this way. Well, I actually don't know how I usually draw. But, 2 minute sketches done on the spot is probably the best way to learn and get better at drawing from life.

Day 24- Adventures to NY

I was alone in NYC for 6 hours running on 3 hours of sleep with unlimited one day use subway pass. And this is what I did...

The first sketch is of Central park (where I saw crazy marathoners from all around the world, best day to be at Central Park and a perfect place to eat PBnJ on a rock).
The next four are from the NY public library, it is an extravagant structure filled with gorgeous chandeliers. Just beautiful.
The last one is of the Lion outside the library...

All I can say is, the best way to explore the city and learn more is to do it alone. I am very happy that my parents (like always) were not there on time and were only 6 hours late. I would have never taken the initiative to do this if I wasn't placed in the situation and I took thorough advantage of it. =)

The story will be up soon.

here is a very cool video of the ING NY Marathon's course for 2009

Day 23

"Interdependence is and ought to be as much the ideal of man as self-sufficiency. Man is a social being. Without interrelation with society he cannot realize its oneness with the universe or suppress his egotism."
- Mohandas K. Gandhi

Umm, he is also correct. This to some may seem the opposite of the previous quote, but it doesnt necessarily have to be. I think there has to be a balance, if time requires, one should be able to do everything on their own and for the rest interdependence is what will help suppress our egos like Gandhi said.

Here are old pictures I found of this plate I had decorated for my room mate. It was for Diwali last year I think.

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."
-Lazarus Long

A quote from Time Enough For Love. Written by Robert Heinlein. This quote has tempted me to read the book. At least one other person believes/believed in almost the same thing as I do.

Day 22

~Diwali~

Yes, Diwali is not that great in Philly.
no painted diyas (had to work with a pumpkin), no rangolis, no mithai, no family, no pretty clothes, no off from school, no fire works, no getting money from relatives
but, the only thing that's there is the inner light.
Light of knowledge, and that's all that matters.
